Having a hierarchy of sources can help unravel the skein of ambiguities in several cases. Such as that between (measurement) uncertainty as opposed to total (“analytical”) error, between commutability, comparability and compatibility, between detection capability and sensitivity, between influences and interferences, between resistance to influences and specificity. A particularly useful cleanup in the medical laboratory, where we often encounter the cross-over between terms for measurements or examinations on materials and terms for clinical diagnoses referring to people. Where the performance characteristics of nominal qualitative results are still neglected, despite the availability of authoritative guidelines
